Look, Ma! No more squinting!

[rgucci @ Sunday, October 24, 2004]

Today is my very first day as a bespectacled citizen. I got my prescription glasses earlier today. Turns out that I have trouble seeing things that are far away and at a distance, things have started to become fuzzy. So perfect vision I have no longer! I knew reading all that porn in the dark would come back and bite me in the ass!

It's astonishing how much better my vision is with the glasses on. What's even more astonishing is I never noticed how blurry things have been before I even thought of getting them.

So far, I only need them for outdoors, for such things as reading signs and sizing up people who are walking towards me. My reading is still fine with out them. Even using the computer is good with just these plain eyeballs. In fact, I had to remove my glasses a few seconds after typing this. I was starting to get a headache with them on.

I didn't know you had so many options when deciding what kind of lenses to use. They had these plain ordinary lenses, anti-glare, anti-UV radiation and the coolest by far were these photo-sensitive lenses that turn darker in the presence of more light. So instant sunglasses! Those were a bit too much and quite pricey too, so I just settled for the middle of the road anti-glare/anti-UV lenses.

They also had a special promotion: buy a pair of glasses and you can buy an MP3 player for around 300 buxx! The things people do to sell stuff...

Anyway, I'm now excited to try them on at work tomorrow. I hope it goes well with my tie.

Welcome to the club! Have you considered using contact lens?

Yes, I have considered using contact lenses but, being the same kind of person that can hardly stand to use eyedrops, I don't think I can actually bear to put a lens in my eye. Don't get me wrong, I'm not so squeamish about putting all sorts of things in various parts of my body, just not the eyes.

When I was a kid I always wanted to wear glasses. Silly me. I thought that they actually would make me look more intelligent (and cool).

I got my wish at about age 26 when I finally realized that the headaches I got was due to poor vision. Ever since then I have worn glasses and each year my vision gets worse.

And you know what? I HATE IT.

Reminds me about the old adage: Be careful what you wish for....

I can't even wear contacts becuase my eyes get too dry in the office.

So instead of looking all cool and intelligent like I wanted I end up being burdened by this handicap.

Every year, I go to the eye doctor to have my eyes checked, and every year, my grade inches up a bit. Every year, I ask the same question: whether laser surgery could help me see. And every year, I get the same response: there's nothing we can do for you.

I never had perfect vision. My left eye has always been much weaker than my right eye, since I was born. So I guess I don't really know what I'm missing. But just the same, I always wonder how the world would look with two eyes. Maybe one day, I will get a chance.

So in the meantime, I'm also stuck with glasses. :(
